Le Macine

Le Macine Cultural Centre in Castelvecchio di Compito opened in March 2017 is a new structure born from a significant work of restoration of the former olive oil mill in via del Molino.

The new cultural centre is located in a strategic area next to the Village of the camellias and the Camelietum, but also to important preserved natural areas. Thanks to the centre, visitors of the international camellia exposition will have the chance to know the history and the traditions of the territory, in particular those related to the farming communities of the past and the production of olive oil.

The cultural centre collects objects and tools of the rural tradition, and also  the 'Carpenter room', realised with tools donated by the Landi family. Le Macine provides with a wide display of information panels rabout the nearby natural areas of Lago della Gherardesca and Oasi del Bottaccio.

The centre is also worth a visit for its architectural features, and the preserved old grinders and the stone pool systems used in the production of olive oil. All these elements are not only visible, but even highlighted by a special illumination system.
